The Department of English, under the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FASS), started its journey with two predominant visions: first, to enhance and nourish students’ mental, ethical and creative facets of their personality; secondly to prepare themselves for efficient professional and technical employment in the future. It aims to be the best education provider keeping pace with the modern world with an effective learning process.
There can be no denying that ethics, values, morality and creativity are the essential ingredients of nation-building. As a pioneering private university of Bangladesh, AIUB has always been committed to imparting these ingredients among its students as the larger concerns of society. The Department of English firmly believes that value-education can bring excellence in leadership and consequently excellence in nation-building. Keeping these in mind, the curriculum for English has been designed and intended to provide general knowledge and to develop intellectual capacities for all. What’s more, English as a mother department or subject turns up with its practical implementation more than any other department or program around. To be precise, it is one of the finest Liberal Arts curriculums around.
The Department of English at AIUB offers a four-year Bachelor of Arts in English degree in eight consecutive semesters with a 120 credit-hour UGC approved curriculum. These credits are divided into three area; 1. General Education Courses, 2. English Core Courses, and 3. English Elective Courses. Students must complete 45 credits of general education (15 courses), 45 credits of core (15 courses) and 30 credits of electives (10 courses – including ‘Teaching Practicum’). The Department of English, AIUB promises to enhance the proficiency of both the areas of English language and literature among the students. It has the two Majors: 1. Major in Linguistics and TEFL (Teaching of English as Foreign Language), and 2. Major in Literature.
Major in Linguistics and TEFL aims at developing students’ expertise and skills in the area of Applied Linguistics; so that they may build their careers as language teachers, teacher-trainers, translators, administrators, or in some other fields where knowledge of linguistic issues is important. The program is designed for those who aspire to become teachers of English as foreign language. With this in mind, a set of courses have been designed to create a greater awareness of the dynamics of the classroom, to acquaint participants with a range of approaches to TEFL and to provide criteria for selecting those approaches relevant to their own teaching situation, to enable participants to make principled decisions on classroom methodology based on an understanding of research into second language acquisition, an understanding of recent approaches to language teaching.
Major in Literature acquaints students with British, American and South Asian English literature as well as their cultural and historical contexts. It also aims to impart knowledge of literary theories and philosophical issues. Literature classes focus on the ability to articulate and defend ideas, to appreciate the values of ideas different from one’s own, to critically evaluate the concerns raised by individual works, and finally to understand very complex human faculty in dealing with others and the self. Critical thinking and effective writing are the constant goals of our Department’s continually upgrading curriculum, with its modern concerns.
It needs to be mentioned that students have the unique privilege to go for double majors (like, Majors in Literature and TEFL) or one Major and one minor (like, Major in Language &Linguistics and Minor in Literature). Even, they have the opportunity to take Minors from other FASS disciplined like Media & Mass Communication or Economics.
